Hi all HC owners,
I own a BCC 28 and am looking to replace some chainplates. I would like to drill round holes and use a button head bolt. I was told the HC's use them. Can you guys confirm that and give me any feedback about them over the long haul? Any issues at all? I doubt there would be, but wanted to throw it by you guys first.
Thanks,
Ben

Hey Ben -
I can't say for all the HCs - But our 41T has 1/2inch bolts - with a long shank. They are not a button head but a round head with a slot. Suspect they were modified from a hexhead bolt.
I just replaced one and thats what we did -- rounded the hex head and cut a slot.
You might want to make sure the shank is long enough to reach thru the chainplate and the hull - would give a better bearing surface for the loads.
Hope that helps!
Cheers- Jim |

For those who have had experience changing/replacing the chain plate bolts, is there a source, other than a custom manufacturer, for the chain plate bolts that have an angled head?
Our customer has some that are broken/in need of replacing, and knowing how much it can cost to make one-off parts (we have a machine shop with the capabilities to do this), I would like to find a more economical solution for him.
Any help is much appreciated!

For chainplates I order 1/2 * 13 thread Carriage Bolts from boltdepot.com
My machineist then turns off the square part and puts a slot in the head.
It it is bent put a support (chisel) near the head so head is not flattened.
Strike sharply about 2 " down from head with a 4lb sledge. Now compare to orig bolt until angles are same. Last polish head. Voila done! |
