I have refinished the table along with all the woodwork in the head. I used Interlux matt interior finish and it turned out really nice. I can't tell the difference between what I've done and the rest of the wood. Good luck. I think the key to good results is in the prep. work regardless of what finish is ultimately used. Don't rush that and all will be fine!

Yes, the good news is that the epoxy finish (if not destroyed by heat or sunlight) makes a fine base for traditional varnish... well, any finish...
